about myself

I am

Primarily a writer
Intuitively a poet
Formally a journalist
Temperamentally an author
Vocationally a social-sector documentarian.

I am

Secondarily a facilitator Of literary events
Also discussions
Theatre
And writing workshops…

I am

Importantly at that juncture
Where I seek to breathe life into emotions
Also places and people
And voice all that goes unheard
In the din of development.

I am

Whole-heartedly for equality
And equitable living.

I am

Inspired by what the great poet Ben Okri writes in his book ‘Mental Fight’:
You can’t remake the world
Without remaking yourself
Each new era begins within.
We could use the new era
To clean our eyes,
To see the world differently,
To see ourselves more clearly.
Only free people can make a free world.
Infect the world with your light.
I aspire to infect the world with free spirit,
And so, I write…

Professional Reckoner

I began my journey as a documentarian and writer under the able guidance of renowned ad-man, documentary filmmaker, and author of Bangalore Through the Ages, the late Peter Colaco, and went on to work with him for several years. Thereafter, I pursued a full time career as an art and culture journalist with the Times of India, until 2013, when I quit my job to immerse my energies into social sector documentation.
Ever since, I have been engaged as a documentarian with various NGOs. I write for leading publications on art, culture and books. I curate literary events. Importantly, I have found my identity as an author, the underlying intent being to spread my ideology for equitable living via activist fiction.
My recent novel Hunger’s Daughters (Om Books International, December 2018) is born out of my experiences of documenting in India's rural heartland.
My next novel Taboo, which is being published by Picador, Pan Macmillan in 2019, is born of my experiences of documenting under-aged girls who are kidnapped, and trafficked.
In the 2016, Sapna Book House approached me to research and write The Community Catalyst – a novel inspired by the life experiences of a civil servant (recommended reading for Indian Administrative Services aspirants).
In 2010, I conceptualised Mind Blogs 1.0, and invited Zahid H Javali and Christina Daniels to co-author the first blog to book format, published by Write Wing Media).
In 2014, I co-curated the debut Times Literary Carnival, Bangalore, along with Zahid H Javali. In 2016, I debuted the Literary Lounge series at the British Council (BCL), Bangalore, and the Know Your Classics sessions for children.
Most recently, with the intent of bringing sensorial writing and reading expricnes to travellers, I have pioneered the Writer’s Yatra and Reader’s Yatra interactive writing and reading workshops in offbeat locations.
I dabble in theatre. I believe in harmonising with the elements through music, and play the western classical piano, violin and guitar.

My Formative Background

I schooled at Sacred Heart Girls’ High School, Bangalore. Then, pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Relations, Economics and Sociology at St Joseph’s College, Bangalore, and thereafter acquired a Master’s degree in English Literature from the Madras University. I went on to focus on Advertising and Journalism, and procured two diplomas in the subjects at the Media Centre, St. Joseph’s College, Bangalore. Also, an English Honours certification on the Dissenting Muse, a study on beat literature at St. Joseph’s College. A few years into making documentary films, I had the opportunity to be among a select few to procure a certification in Film Appreciation through a course jointly curated by the Film and Television Institute (FTII) and National Film Archives of India (NFAI), Pune. I studied the German language covering the Grundstufe (ground level) and Mittelstufe (middle level) courses over two-and-a-half years at the Max Mueller Bhavan/Goethe Institut, Bangalore.
